Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya is now in immediate life-threatening danger.
We knew this moment was coming but it does not make it any easier.
Nir Hasson of Haaretz הארץ reports: “Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, the director of a major Gaza hospital who has been imprisoned by Israel since 2024, is in immediate life-threatening danger, Physicians for Human Rights said Saturday, after his lawyer reported a severe deterioration in his condition following a visit at the “Rakefet” detention facility at Israel’s Nitzan Prison.
[He was] shackled, escorted by masked prison guards and bearing fresh bruises to his head, face, ears and neck… struggled to breathe and speak, appeared extremely weak and seemed close to losing consciousness several times during the visit. [His attorney] said he believed his client was in immediate danger.”There is no mercy or grace or decency to be found in the wretched place at this time.
I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news. An honorable dedicated pediatrician and hospital director is being murdered slowly and in full view, against all manner of international laws protecting medical personnel and his urgent appeal for release was denied.
We must prepare ourselves.
