Happy Birthday Zora! January 7th.

As soon as I found Zora Neale Hurston’s perfect collection of authentic African American stories and folktales,  Mules and Men, I knew I would take it home to my family in rural Georgia.  Some members of the family had moved North to Massachusetts but I followed them there, reading the stories Zora had collected and making them laugh as they recalled the sounds of people in our small community that they remembered and knew.  Many of our people they would never see again.  Travel South was expensive; their familial duties in the cold North deeply affected their ability to cope anywhere but where they were.

I was, and am, grateful for the sound of the older generations’ ways of thinking and of speaking.  Their love of story; the fantastic way they could entertain each other, the whole community, just by being themselves and elaborating on their experiences and observations. A friend sent this reading to me; I had no memory that it existed.  I offer it on Zora Neale Hurston’s birthday, January 7th, to thank her, to share her, to delight in the droll way she saw and loved us. ~aw

~ aw
