My Father’s Ghost Talks To Luigi

El Fantasma Antasma De Mi Padre Le Habla A Luigi

I love this young comedian, Josh Johnson.  Just when you think the world might have turned to Diddy along comes someone who is decidedly not. We are reminded that just as there will always be a Michael Jackson rising from the ashes, there will be a Josh Johnson or a Trevor Noah.  It is a wonderful thing. We must celebrate. ~aw

My father’s ghost has shaken itself free of eternal slumber as his daughter muses on the fate of Luigi Mangione. I find myself carried back, in memory, to Georgia, USA, in the 1960s, when my father, a poor man in terrible health, heard there was something to help poor, sick people, called Social Security. Somehow he had heard that the Democratic Party, for which he had risked his life to vote, brought this new assistance to the poor.

My father was a sharecropper, with a wife and eight children. Every one of us, assumed in those days, destined to work in the cotton fields exactly as ancestors had done during centuries of enslavement.  Unlike during enslavement, however, housing (shacks) was not promised, or medical attention.  Once my father asked the white woman landowner for a raise from 300 dollars a year, with all hands, except the youngest babies, working, and he was roundly abused verbally; and given nothing.

Still, he found the courage, later on, to go into town, to find the office that housed Social Security, or perhaps he wrote a letter – I do not know which it was – but what I did learn was that his petition to have some assistance was denied. By then he was so ill he could not stand without leaning against something.  Still, during his last years, he worked in a tiny, country store, for a white man who had at one time been  sheriff and whose reputation among black people was extremely poor. I have to say, at this late date, when I am older than my father was when he died, that I did not have the heart to look closely into that relationship.

I pray never to have to kill anyone; though when I lived in Mississippi and faced the possibility that terrorists of the Ku Klux Klan might harm my family that included my child, I realized that such is the strength of motherhood that, in defending what I cared most about in life, I would have shot them with barely a second thought.

What to do about Luigi?  This son of ours whom we embrace instinctively?  Killing anyone is wrong. Half a million young men killed in Ukraine for politics few of them understood, isn’t discussed. The thousands slaughtered in Palestine by Netanyahu/Biden/Harris. The endless atrocities committed against the people of Africa, billions of murders over centuries by now. Ditto the murders of incalculable numbers of Indigenous ancestors in the Americas. The murder this very moment of countless millions, all over the planet, of the starving, often ill, houseless poor.

And for what?

Rule by People who already live on Earth as if they’re from, headed toward, or on a different planet than the rest of us.

Let us gather in council with each other, on every suffering continent, and see what, together –and before WW3 wipes us all out – we can make of our dread predicament. Our phones will be useful in connecting us, but it will be our voices, our faces, our eyes, truly felt, that will determine whether we survive. ~aw

See Michael Moore’s brilliant SICKO; a film that explores how lacking in support Americans are for their health.

~ aw
