I did not realize for a long time that Fidel Castro’s mother and father were not married. That she was his cook on the sugarcane plantation her husband/master owned before they wed and Fidel was given his father’s name. Fidel knew the evils of the plantation system inside out, which is why he so easily worked with peasants and why he was on their side. Why, when he cut sugar cane with them after the revolution it was not only to show solidarity, but because he knew how. Fidel is the one who rose up, not to join the rich, but to dethrone them. He must be punished, even after death. That is what the rich and powerful can do. But then, they too, grow old, sicken, lose their strength, die. Their countries fail: there is starvation, addiction, ignorance, torment, throughout the “conquering” lands. There will no doubt come a day when the most hostile Cuba hater will wonder what the word “Cuba” means, or whether it is something one could find on a map. If in fact a map can at that point even be imagined. ~aw

Durante mucho tiempo no me enteré de que la madre y el padre de Fidel Castro no estaban casados. Ella era su cocinera en la finca de caña de azúcar que poseía su esposo/amo antes de casarse y a Fidel le pusieron el nombre de su padre. Fidel conocía los males del sistema de plantación desde su interior, razón por la que le fue fácil relacionarse con los campesinos y ponerse de su parte. Bueno, cuando cortó caña con ellos tras el triunfo de la revolución no fue sólo para mostrar solidaridad, sino porque sabía cómo hacerlo. Fidel es quien se levantó, no para unirse a los ricos, sino para derrocarlos. Merece ser castigado, aun después de su muerte. Eso es lo que pueden hacer los ricos y poderosos. Pero después ellos también envejecen, enferman, pierden fuerzas y mueren. Sus países fracasan: hay hambre, adicción, ignorancia, angustia, por todas las tierras “conquistadoras”. Sin duda llegará un día en que los más hostiles odiadores de Cuba se preguntarán qué significa la palabra “Cuba”, o si es algo que se podría encontrar en un mapa. Si es que, de hecho, se puede siquiera imaginar un mapa en ese momento. ~ aw
