Three Films From Award-Winning Filmmaker Pratibha Parmar,
With Special Guest Pulitzer Prize-Winning Novelist Alice Walker,
Slated for Day at Sebastiani Theatre

Parmar to Receive the SIFF | MUSEA Center Women In Film Award Recognition

Sonoma, CA May 5, 2023—Three noted documentary works from award-winning filmmaker Pratibha Parmar are slated for a day-long special cinema event, featuring live appearances by the filmmaker, and Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Alice Walker, on Saturday, June 3 at the Sebastiani Theatre.

The Parmar showcase for this special cinema event includes her films A Place of Rage (1991), Warrior Marks (1993), and Alice Walker: Beauty In Truth (2013). In addition to these films, at timed screenings throughout the day, Parmar will be recognized with the SIFF | MUSEA Center Women In Film award which is accompanied by a $5,000 grant. A special, limited-capacity private reception with Parmar and Walker is also scheduled.

“I am absolutely honored that Musea and SIFF have come together to host this day-long event around a selection of my films,” said Pratibha Parmar. “I’m looking forward to sharing my work with audiences in Sonoma.”

Filmmaker Pratibha Parmar has an exemplary track record for her passionate commitment to making films with integrity and illuminating untold stories with visual prowess and imagination. Her award-winning work has been widely exhibited at international film festivals and broadcast globally. Parmar’s dedication to bringing complex subjects into mainstream media has guided the contours of popular discourse on race, feminism, identity, and creativity. Pratibha was born in Nairobi, Kenya, and lives between London, England, and Berkeley, California.

“This is just what Pratibha’s fabulous films deserve,” said Alice Walker. “The highest praise from someone who gets the impact of her creative genius in helping others bear knowing some of the challenges of this world.”

Walker is an internationally celebrated writer, poet, and activist whose books include seven novels, four collections of short stories, four children’s books, and volumes of essays and poetry. In 1983, she won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the National Book Award for her novel The Color Purple.

The event was conceived by Alice Walker and Musea Center founder and Curate Shiloh Sophia to provide an inspiring and educational look at the impact of Parmar’s work as a benchmark to further explore the topics of race, gender, resistance, and human rights.
