The Medicine Blow

Who would be free
Must first receive
& accept
the Medicine
Blow.
It is the crushing
Blow to the heart’s
Universe
We have avoided
-in some cases –
Since birth.
Was no one waiting
To receive us?
It is reverberation of
The original blow
That said:
Everyone has all
They need
To tackle
This rough
Life.
But you.
The Medicine blow
Waits
Like an outlaw
In the hedges
For the moment
You are least aware.
You sit happy
On your fragile ledge
That you think
Is solid.
Ah, I made it!
You chortle
Inwardly.
I have made it
Through!
I will never
At this fine
Point
Have to face
The dreaded
Pain
That I fear
Will undo me.
But just then –
Unannounced
Usually –
It arrives
To completely
Upend
Your life.
The Medicine Blow.
Some die
From it.
Others, for the first
Time,
Fearlessly
And
Fully
Live.

To make medicine is to engage upon a special period of fasting, thanksgiving, prayer and self-denial, even of self- torture. The procedure is entirely a devotional exercise. The purpose is to subdue the passions of the flesh and to improve the spiritual self. The bodily abstinence and the mental concentration upon lofty thoughts cleanses both the body and the soul and puts them into or keeps them in health. Then the intellectual mind gets closer toward conformity with the mind of the Great Medicine above us.

Quién estuviese libre
debe recibir primero
y aceptar
el golpe
de la medicina.
Es el aplastante
golpe al Universo
del corazón
que hemos esquivado
– en algunos casos –
desde el nacimiento.
¿Nadie estaba esperando
para recibirnos?
Es la resonancia
del golpe original
que dijo:
Cada uno tiene todo
cuanto necesita
para enfrentar
esta dura
vida.
Menos tú.
El golpe de la medicina
espera
como un bandido
entre los árboles
por el momento
en que estés menos prevenido.
Te sientas feliz
en tu frágil alfeizar
que piensas
es sólido.
¡Ah, lo logré!
te ríes
para ti.
¡Lo he hecho
totalmente!
Nunca
en este magnífico
punto
tendré que hacer frente
al pavoroso
dolor
que temí
me destruiría.
Pero justo entonces –
usualmente
imprevisto –
aquel llega
para completamente
derribar
tu vida.
El golpe de la medicina.
Algunos mueren
de él.
Otros, por primera
vez,
valiente
y
plenamente
viven.

Hacer medicina es involucrarse en un período especial de ayuno, acción de gracias, rezo y autorrenuncia, incluso auto-tortura. El procedimiento es totalmente un ejercicio piadoso. El propósito es someter las pasiones de la carne y mejorar el ser espiritual. La abstinencia corporal y la concentración mental en elevados pensamientos limpian el cuerpo y el alma y los ponen o los mantienen en salud. Entonces la mente intelectual se acerca más a la conformidad con la mente de la Gran Medicina por encima de nosotros.
