Now I know
For sure
That we were
Spirit kin.
It seemed unlikely
Decades ago
When I found myself
Only starving for lunch
Outside your rose
Colored turn-a-round
and door.
But immediately
My artist’s eye delighted
In everything
I saw
& bonded happily
With your intimacy
With Nature
and with Art.

I had no boat,
And was never near
Enough to water
To learn to sail.
My bilingualism
Remains
A sketch;
But having a home,
The longing for one
All my young life,
Was a desire
Each of us
Could understand,
And shared.

Just as I have found
And resurrected from
Oblivion and ruin
Many a dwelling,
You have created inhabitable
Masterpieces.
The hills around
My modest house
Are full of them.

You have left us
At 95!
Such a long life;
Filled
With mysteries, traumas,
Disasters and joys,
As all lives
Seen from outside
Of even up close
Always are.

Leery
Of those with money
The source of which
I fail
To understand
I kept a distance –
Though gallantly
You invited me and my
Richly varied friends
To eat at your table
& go swimming
On top of your
Spectacular
House.

Only you would situate
A swimming pool
Up there, better to
Swim in the sky
You must have thought;
Just as a ladder that stretches
Beyond the roof
Of your study
Invites visitors
From Earth
And Extraterrestrials
Alike to meet
And perhaps
Share
Intergalactic gossip &
A bottle of
Earth’s
Great wine.

Farewell, then;
We part not as friends
But as kindred spirits.
Each of us singular, driven,
Peculiar
But knowing as we study
Nature, so like
Ourselves,
That
Existing, flourishing,
Worshiping the beauty
All around us –
In whatever
Form
We ourselves
Are in,
Is also,
Like Nature
Herself;
Proof of having
Wandered
Into the one home
That is
For us;
Our passion
Our communion

Ahora sé
con certeza
que éramos
familiares en espíritu.
Parecía improbable
décadas atrás
cuando me hallé
solo muriendo por almorzar
fuera de la entrada color rosa
y de tu puerta.
Pero inmediatamente
mi ojo de artista se deleitó
en todo
lo que vi
y me uní feliz
con tu intimidad
con La Naturaleza
y con el arte.

Yo no tenía bote,
y nunca estuve bastante
cerca del agua
para aprender a navegar.
Mi bilingüismo
sigue siendo
un esbozo;
pero tener un hogar,
ansiar uno
toda mi juventud,
era un deseo
que cada uno de nosotros
podía entender,
y compartir.

Justo como he hallado
y resucitado del
olvido y la ruina
a muchas viviendas,
tú has creado inhabitables
obras maestras.
Las colinas en torno
a mi modesta casa
están llenas de ellas.

Nos has dejado
¡a los 95!
una vida tan larga;
llena
de misterios, traumas,
desastres y alegrías,
como todas las vidas
vistas desde fuera
o incluso de cerca
siempre lo son.

Recelosa
de ésos con dinero
cuyo origen
no logro
comprender
guardaba la distancia –
aunque cortésmente
me invitaste a mí y mis
muy diversos amigos
a comer en tu mesa
y a nadar
en la cima
de tu espectacular
casa.
Solo tú podrías poner
una piscina
allá arriba, mejor
nadar en el cielo,
habrás pensado;
así como una escalera que se extiende
más allá del techo
de tu estudio
invita a visitantes
de la Tierra
y a extraterrestres
por igual a encontrarse
y quizás
compartir
chismes intergalácticos y
una botella de
un gran vino
de la Tierra.

Adiós, entonces;
nos separamos no como amigos
sino como espíritus familiares.
Cada uno singular, apasionado,
peculiar
pero sabiendo mientras estudiamos
la Naturaleza, tan igual
a nosotros,
que existir, crecer,
adorar la belleza
a todo nuestro alrededor–
en cualquier
forma
en que nosotros
estemos,
es también,
como la Naturaleza
misma;
prueba de haber
vagado
por el único hogar
que es
para nosotros;
nuestra pasión
nuestra comunión
con todo lo que existe
y
lo más verdadero,
nuestro sagrado
descanso del viaje

1. Tener voluntad, amor e imaginación
