Sometime in the late 1980s or early 90s I was arrested for- I believe, not recalling specifics- insisting that the University of California divest holdings that supported the Apartheid state of South Africa. One joy in the event was being held in custody with the wonderful and wise Maya Angelou. May she rest in happiness. This was definitely a high point of life: to be able to stand up for people I’d never seen but recognized from very far away. We sang, of course.
Now to see this standing up of the South African people! (Below). This is what we hoped might happen. Not just on this crucial issue of Israel’s behavior against Palestinians, but on all other issues of conscience, that have caused our people, wherever we have been, oceans of tears and rivers of blood.
On the issue of Palestine and Jews, I have been fortunate to be in solidarity with Jewish people in every action I have been involved in, against Israeli atrocities against the Palestinian people. I state this here, so that this fact might be remembered. What is often overlooked, and I once called a circle of Jewish and African American women to discuss this, is the fact that Israel’s behavior endangers Jews, wherever they are. Perhaps this has been hard, for whatever reason, for many to see. But it is real. Racist, anti-Jewish people, prefer not to notice that Jewish people, like everybody else, contain incredible degrees of difference. Once, for instance, on a boat attempting to get to Gaza, it was the Jewish Israeli former military officer who inspected the bottom of our boat each day to be sure it wasn’t sabotaged -by Israeli specialists that I believe he said he’d trained! – during the night. That this issue is fantastically complex must not make anyone fall back into cliches of the past. Indeed, it is distressing to see how easy and simple-minded this appears to be!
However! Onward. Nobody thought any of this would be easy, though we never dreamed Israel would turn out to be what it has become. It has, though. Now it is up to each of us to discover, as South Africans are demonstrating, what we have become.
I hold your hand, Sister Sisulu! Maya Angelou and I are smiling at you and yours! And, being us, we imagine creating a dance!

Israeli lobby’s attempts to isolate South African Minister backfires

The Israeli lobby, in an insult to South Africans, has shamefully attacked South Africa’s Minister of International Relations, Cde Lindiwe Sisulu, with Zev Krengel of the SA Jewish Board of Deputies (SAJBD) falsely claiming that she is the “single biggest threat” to the Jewish community.
The attack followed Minister Sisulu’s announcement that South Africa had downgraded diplomatic relations <https://ymlp83.com/167cbuuqejadaehjesafaeeyazajmwue/click.php> with the State of Israel (and in particular that SA had downgraded its Embassy in Tel Aviv to a Liaison office). South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has referred <https://ymlp83.com/32711uuqebanaehjesataeeyatajmwue/click.php> to the downgrade as a form of “pressure on the government of Israel,” adding that “our position is very clear on this and that is the policy of our government and that is the way we are going to proceed”.
The Israeli lobby has a history of attacking, undermining and vilifying government officials and political leaders who articulate and carry out decisions of government and ANC policy. Their continuous attempts at trying to draw a wedge between our representatives is reprehensible and must come to an end. In addition, to accuse a Minister from the ANC of anti-Semitism for merely having acted on a unanimous resolution of the organization’s highest decision making body is ingenious and appears as a desperate and malicious attempt to unduly influence government deployments.
The Israeli lobby has failed to stop the already implemented downgrade of the Embassy in Israel but is still trying to sell a myth to its Israeli supporters that the downgrade has not taken place. They are insulting their own backers. The Israeli lobby should accept the downgrade as well as the South African government policy on Palestine-Israel that represents the majority of our people.
We call upon the South African Jewish Board of Deputies and their appendages to stop conflating ‘Jewishness’ with support for the murderous and discriminatory policies of the Israeli Apartheid state. Those two identities are different. One can be Jewish and yet still be critical of Israel. The patently false and dangerous conflation is also severely undermined by the fact that, millions of Jews in SA and around the world engage in daily protest as their collective expression of disgust at the systematic ethnic cleansing and other violations of international humanitarian law perpetrated by Israel against the Palestinians. Our own experience is instructive, outstanding (White) Afrikaaners such as Bram Fisher, Beyers Naude and others, refused to tie their Afrikaaner identity to the Apartheid regime.
Instead of the Minsiter being isolated, the plan by the Israeli lobby has backfired. BDS SA joins the overwhelming chorus of support for Minister Sisulu, the ANC and South African Government in their steadfast and unanimous support for the Palestinian struggle against Israeli Apartheid. Here are just some organizations that have come out in support:

– In addition, statements have been issued by the Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Fateh, Hamas, Jamiat and Chief Mandla Mandela … who have all welcomed South Africa’s move.
One of those who has come out in support of South Africa’s decision to have downgraded relations with Israel is the respected Israeli journalist, Gideon Levy. Writing in the Israeli Haaretz Newspaper he says:
“South Africa, in a move that generates respect, is teaching Israel an important lesson about instilling the legacy of the past and learning its lessons. By cutting off ties with an occupying, apartheid state, it’s telling Israel: We’ve learned the lessons of our past. What about you? The lesson that South Africa has learned is: Never again…When South Africa says “No” to Israel, it is speaking in the name of Mandela, who supported the Palestinians in their struggle and felt a moral obligation to assist them…There’s no doubt that today Mandela would also support severing relations. South Africa is also speaking for those exemplary Jews who struggled hand in hand with the black freedom fighters, were wounded and jailed with them, and one can assume are already fed up with Israel.”

Meet Tshwaane Komape, the 28 year old runner from the province of Limpopo. Komape has, this year alone, run over 11 marathons. Each race he has run in support of the Palestinian struggle, and, in particular, to highlight Israel’s killing and imprisonment of Palestinian children. On Sunday the 9th of June 2019 Komape will be running South Africa’s most well-known and prestigious race, the Comrades Marathon.
Komape has founded a BDS Palestine Sports Network – a group of people across South Africa who run, cycle and participate in other sports in support of Palestine. Members of the BDS Palestine Sports Network do this by wearing the Palestinian scarf, a BDS tshirt, flag, other Palestinian regalia and using their social media networks to raise awareness.

Palestinian youth and minors are most vulnerable under Israeli occupation. Since 2000 Israel has killed over 3000 Palestinian children. In the last 10 years alone, between 2007 and 2017, Israel has killed more than 1200 Palestinian minors. That is that Israel has killed 1 Palestinian child every 3 days since 2000. Between 2000 and 2017 Israel has injured 13000 Palestinian children and has detained some 12000 children (on average 700 Palestinian children are detained every year) with the overwhelming majority of them being beaten or tortured while in Israeli custody. Israel currently holds over 300 Palestinian children (some as young as 13 years old) as political prisoners. A recent World Health Organisation (WHO) report revealed that at least three children in the Palestinian Gaza Strip are left permanently disabled every month as a result of Israeli violence. Amputations make up an overwhelming proportion of permanent disabilities.

En algún momento de la década de los 80 me arrestaron creo –no recuerdo los detalles– que por insistir en que la Universidad de California eliminara las participaciones financieras que apoyaran el estado de apartheid de Sudáfrica. Una alegría en este suceso fue que estuve arrestada junto a la maravillosa y sabia Maya Angelou. Que en paz descanse. Definitivamente este fue un momento destacado de la vida: poder defender a personas que nunca había visto pero con los que me identificaba desde muy lejos. Nosotros cantábamos, por supuesto.
¡Y ahora ver esta postura de defensa del pueblo sudafricano! (Abajo). Esto es lo que teníamos esperanza de que sucediera. No solo en este asunto decisivo de la actitud de Israel contra los palestinos, sino en todos los demás aspectos de la conciencia, que han ocasionado a nuestra gente, dondequiera que hayamos estado, mares de lágrimas y ríos de sangre.
Acerca del tema de Palestina y los judíos, he sido afortunada de solidarizarme con personas judías en cada acto en el que me he involucrado, frente a las atrocidades que comete Israel contra el pueblo palestino. Expongo esto aquí, para que se recuerde este aspecto. Lo que a menudo se pasa por alto, y alguna vez convoqué a un círculo de mujeres judías y afroamericanas para discutir este aspecto, es el hecho de que la actuación de Israel pone en peligro a los judíos, dondequiera que estén. Quizás ha sido difícil, por la razón que sea, que muchos vean eso. Pero es real. Los racistas, antisemitas, prefieren no reconocer que la gente judía, como cualquier otra, incluye increíbles niveles de diferencia. En una ocasión, por ejemplo, en un barco que trataba de llegar a Gaza, era un exoficial militar judío israelí quien inspeccionaba el fondo de nuestro barco todos los días para asegurarse de que no fuera saboteado durante la noche por expertos israelíes, quienes creo que dijo que ¡él mismo los había adiestrado! Los intentos del lobby israelí por aislar a los ministros sudafricanos son contraproducentes
En un insulto a los sudafricanos, el lobby israelí ha atacado vergonzosamente a la Ministra de Relaciones Internacionales de Sudáfrica, Cde Lindiwe Sisulu, cuando Zev Krengel, de la Junta de Diputados Judíos de SA (SAJBD), afirmó falsamente que ella es la “amenaza más grande” para la comunidad judía.
El ataque tuvo lugar tras el anuncio de la Ministra Sisulu de que Sudáfrica había limitado las relaciones diplomáticas con el Estado de Israel y, en particular, que Sudáfrica había reducido su embajada en Tel Aviv a una oficina de enlace. El presidente sudafricano Cyril Ramaphosa se ha referido a la limitación como una forma de “presión sobre el gobierno de Israel”, añadiendo que “nuestra posición es muy clara al respecto y esa es la política de nuestro Gobierno y es de este modo como vamos a proceder”.
El lobby israelí cuenta con una historia de ataques, socavamientos y vilipendios a funcionarios del gobierno y líderes políticos que articulan y ejecutan decisiones de la política del gobierno y el ANC. Sus continuos intentos de tratar de meter una cuña entre nuestros representantes son censurables y deben finalizar. Por otra parte, acusar a un ministro del ANC de antisemitismo. por el simple hecho de haber actuado sobre la base de una resolución unánime del máximo órgano de toma decisiones de la organización es ingenuo y se presenta como un desesperado y malicioso intento de influir indebidamente en las acciones del gobierno.
El lobby israelí ha fracasado en detener la reducción ya efectuada de la Embajada en Israel, pero todavía está tratando de vender el mito a sus partidarios israelíes de que la limitación no se ha efectuado. Están insultando a sus propios partidarios. El lobby israelí debería aceptar la reducción de la embajada, al igual que la política del gobierno sudafricano respecto a Palestina e Israel que representa a la mayoría de nuestra gente.
Llamamos a la Junta de Diputados Judíos de Sudáfrica y sus anexos para que dejen de confundir la cuestión judía con el apoyo a la política genocida y discriminatoria del Estado de apartheid israelí. Esas dos entidades son diferentes. Uno puede ser judío y aún así ser crítico con Israel. La falsa y peligrosa mezcolanza también se ve profundamente minada por el hecho de que millones de judíos en Sudáfrica y en el resto del mundo participan en protestas diarias como expresión colectiva de disgusto ante la sistemática limpieza étnica y otras violaciones del derecho internacional humanitario que perpetra Israel contra los palestinos. Nuestra propia experiencia es instructiva. destacados (blancos) afrikaaners como Bram Fisher, Beyers Naude y otros, se negaron a ligar su identidad afrikaaner al régimen del apartheid.
En lugar de aislar a la Ministra, el plan del lobby israelí ha fracasado. El BDS de Sudáfrica se une al coro abrumador en respaldo de la Ministra Sisulu, el ANC y el gobierno sudafricano en su firme y unánime apoyo a la lucha palestina contra el apartheid israelí.

No hay duda de que hoy Mandela también apoyaría el corte de relaciones. Sudáfrica también está hablando a nombre de aquellos judíos ejemplares que combatieron mano a mano con los luchadores negros por la libertad, que fueron heridos y encarcelados con ellos, y, uno puede suponer, que ya están hartos de Israel.”

Conoce a Tshwaane Komape, el corredor de 28 años de la provincia de Limpopo. Komape, solo este año, ha corrido más de 11 maratones. Cada carrera que él ha corrido en apoyo de la lucha palestina, y, en particular, para destacar el asesinato y el encarcelamiento de niños palestinos por parte de Israel. El domingo 9 de junio de 2019, Komape correrá la carrera más reconocida y prestigiosa de Sudáfrica, los camaradas Maratón.
Komape ha fundado una Red de Deportes BDS Palestine, un grupo de personas en toda Sudáfrica que corre, monta en bicicleta y participa en otros deportes en apoyo de Palestina. Los jóvenes palestinos y los menores son los más vulnerables bajo la ocupación israelí. Desde el 2000, Israel ha matado a más de 3000 niños palestinos. Solo en los últimos 10 años, entre 2007 y 2017, Israel ha matado a más de 1200 menores palestinos. Es decir que Israel ha matado a 1 niño palestino cada 3 días desde 2000. Entre 2000 y 2017, Israel ha herido a 13000 niños palestinos y ha detenido a unos 12000 niños (en promedio, 700 niños palestinos son detenidos cada año), y la gran mayoría de ellos han sido golpeados. O torturados mientras están bajo custodia israelí. Israel actualmente tiene a más de 300 niños palestinos (algunos de tan solo 13 años) como presos políticos. Un informe reciente de la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) reveló que al menos tres niños en la Franja de Gaza palestina quedan permanentemente discapacitados cada mes como resultado de la violencia israelí. Las amputaciones constituyen una proporción abrumadora de discapacidades permanentes.
