WHAT DOES THE AWAKENED PERSON DO? Outrage in Charleston— This IS America!

Outrageous! A white supremacist motivated by racist venom enters Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina, during a Bible study class. He sits down with people there for a while and then starts shooting them, murdering six Black women and three Black men. He calmly reloaded in the course of carrying out these foul murders, telling his victims that he had to do this “because you [meaning Black people] rape our women and are taking over our country”!

Mass murder carried out in a church—a place that is supposed to be a sanctuary in the face of injustice. This brings to mind the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham in 1963 which killed four little girls. And the wave of burnings of Black churches in more recent decades.

Mass murder carried out at this church, which has a history of being a place Black people gathered to organize themselves to stand up to the savage oppression this system has enforced on them for centuries. This history goes back to the church’s founding in 1816. Among its founders was Denmark Vesey who was hung in 1822, along with 35 other Black people, for planning a slave uprising.

The blood of the nine people murdered in Charleston is on the hands of the rulers of this country. Whether this guy acted alone or not, he was acting within a climate that has been deliberately whipped up. White supremacy has been ingrained in the fabric of America from its very beginning. This country was founded on theft of land from and genocide inflicted on the native inhabitants and the dragging of millions of Africans to these shores in slave chains. And white supremacy remains at the heart of this society right down to today.

What does it tell you about this country that George Zimmerman could murder Trayvon Martin as he walked home carrying Skittles and iced tea and walk away with no punishment. That cops could choke Eric Garner to death, ignoring his cries of “I can’t breathe,” and get off scot free. That a South Carolina cop could feel he could get away with shooting Walter Scott in the back as he ran away. That Black communities are built on toxic areas that poison people. That Black couples with good credit were steered to sub-prime loans that led to them disproportionately losing their homes in the 2007 economic meltdown. That 2+ million people are imprisoned in this country, vastly disproportionately Black and Latino. These and more amount to a genocidal program of suppression and deprivation targeting Black people. And they have contributed to a climate in which it is legitimate to view Black people as criminals and justified to murder them. In these and a thousand other ways a message is delivered that Black life doesn’t matter.

All this faces us all with an urgent question: Which side are you on? Are you on the side of the savage oppression and brutality this system enforces on Black people? Or do you stand against these kinds of horrors?

The crocodile tears being shed by those who preside over the brutality and murder this system inflicts on people are worse than useless. It will take revolution, nothing less, to uproot white supremacy and end the oppression of Black people and all the other horrors this system inflicts on humanity. Everyone should understand that there is no middle ground in this struggle where people can be neutral while this system grinds away, crushing the bodies and breaking the spirits of those on the bottom of society. ¡Atroz! Un supremacista blanco incitado por el veneno racista entra a la Iglesia Metodista Episcopal Africana Emmanuel en Charleston, Sur Carolina, durante una lección de estudios bíblicos. Se sienta allí junto a las personas por un rato y luego comienza a dispararles, matando a seis mujeres y tres hombres negros. Calmosamente, recarga su arma mientras lleva a cabo estos horrendos asesinatos, diciéndoles a sus víctimas que tiene que hacer esto “porque ustedes (refiriéndose a las personas de color) violan a nuestras mujeres y se están apropiando del país”.

Matanza colectiva cometida en una iglesia, un lugar que se supone sea un santuario ante la injusticia. Esto trae a la mente el estallido de una bomba en la Iglesia Bautista de la Calle 16 en Birmingham, en 1963, que ocasionó la muerte de cuatro niñas pequeñas. Así como la quema de iglesias de personas de color en años más recientes.

La matanza colectiva se ha realizado en esta iglesia que tiene una historia de ser un sitio donde las personas negras se reunían para enfrentar la salvaje opresión que este sistema ha impuesto sobre ellos durante siglos. Esta historia se retrotrae a la fundación de la iglesia en 1816. Entere sus fundadores estaba Denmark Vesey, que fue ahorcado en 1822, junto con otras 35 personas negras, por planear una rebelión de esclavos. 

La sangre de las nueve personas asesinadas en Charleston cae sobre las manos de los que gobiernan ese país. Si este individuo actuó en solitario o no, estaba actuando bajo un clima que ha sido deliberadamente aguijoneado. La supremacía blanca se ha incrustado en el tejido de Estados Unidos desde sus inicios. Esta nación se fundó sobre la base del robo de territorio de sus habitantes nativos y el genocidio infligido a ellos así como el arrastre de millones de africanos a estas costas encadenados. Y la supremacía blanca ha permanecido en el corazón de esta sociedad justo hasta el día de hoy.

¿Qué les dice sobre este país el hecho de que George Zimmerman pudiera matar a Trayvon Martin mientras iba hacia su casa llevando Skittles * y té frío y salió sin ningún castigo. Los policías mataron a Eric Garner asfixiándolo, ignorando sus gritos de “no puedo respirar” y quedaron absolutamente libres. Que un policía de Sur Carolina sintiera que podía salir indemne de balacear a Walter Scott por la espalda mientras huía, que los barrios negros se construyan en áreas tóxicas que envenenan a la gente, que las parejas negras con buenas referencias fueron embaucadas a préstamos secundarios que los llevaron desproporcionadamente a perder sus casas durante el desastre económico de 2007, que más de dos millones de personas estén encarcelados en este país, con amplia desproporción de latinos y negros, estas cosas y más implican un programa genocida de eliminación y privación que tiene como objetivo a la población negra. Estas cosas han contribuido a la creación de una atmósfera en la que resulta legítimo ver a las personas negras como delincuentes y justifica que sean asesinados. En estas y otras mil formas se transmite un mensaje de que la vida de los negros no importa.

Todos estos aspectos nos enfrentan con una pregunta urgente: ¿De qué parte estás tú? ¿Estás de parte de la opresión salvaje y la brutalidad que autoriza este sistema contra la gente negra? O ¿estás contra estos tipos de horror? 

Las lágrimas de cocodrilo que se derraman por aquellos que son responsables de la brutalidad y la muerte que este sistema inflige en las personas son peores que inútiles.  Hará falta una revolución nada menos, para arrancar de raíz la supremacía blanca y poner fin a la opresión de las personas negras así como todos los otros horrores que este sistema inflige a la humanidad. I myself do not believe
In political parties
Comprised, generally, in my experience, of so
Many who
Are not awake.  Still, all options must be
Presented by those who care.

An unbalanced wakefulness
Can be as treasonous
As blind sleep.

Let there be a private counsel
First
With one’s own heart.
One’s own bright
Or blighted
Spirit and soul.

Then from that sacred spot
Of personal centering
Move outward
To The Circle.

There are always others
More wise than us.
Let us hear them with humility
And do not, as in the past,
Obey an impulse
To shout them down.

We owe it to all the others
Gone before us
Black, white, red;
You know,
The merry ones
Who would have died
Laughing –
If this cheekiness
Had not been
Crushed out of them –
To step thoughtfully here
Into what future
There is left.

We have not lost
And are not lost
If we hold ourselves
In honor and respect.

There is a way forward
And yes
It is with a broken
Heart
But it is our own way
Collectively convened,
Pondered,
Shared.
The Circle,  (call all your friends!)
Like the church
In all our struggles
an extension
Of our unshakably
Trustworthy
And consoling
Arms.

Like a wise grandparent
Who loves us
More than life itself
The Circle sends us out
Into the world
In the direction we choose
Fortified
By its collective wisdom
And ancestor driven
Love.
